The book’s home, and the only African country with constitutional protection for LGBTQ+ people.
South Africa is the only country on the African continent where LGBT rights are enshrined in the constitution, a protection in place since 1996. It was the fifth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2006, and remains the only African nation to have done so. It hosts eight distinct Pride celebrations in a country of roughly 63 million people, and Cape Town will host World Pride in 2028, the first time the event comes to Africa.
A country-specific count of Black American expats in South Africa isn’t separately tracked by any government or research body. The widely cited ~655,000 figure covers Black Americans living abroad worldwide, not South Africa alone, so it isn’t reused here as a South Africa-specific number.
The four paths the book covers in detail.
For applicants whose profession appears on South Africa’s official critical skills list. The most common route for working professionals relocating on their own qualifications.
For those continuing to work remotely for a non-South African employer. Carries its own tax-residency considerations, covered in depth in the book.
Requires proof of a prescribed minimum monthly income or means, no lump-sum or annuity table required, just documented income meeting the threshold.
South Africa’s constitutional equality extends practically here, this route is available to same-sex couples on the same terms as opposite-sex couples.
This is a summary, not immigration advice. Requirements change. Verify current criteria with a qualified immigration consultant before acting.
A comfortable life here, a good one-bedroom, a car, full private medical aid, regular dining out, even domestic help, runs far less than most Americans assume.
A comfortable, not bare-bones, lifestyle in one of the three major cities.
