Cape Town

A mountain, two oceans, and a city that never lets you forget how small you are in a good way.

Location
Southwestern tip of South Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet
Population
About 5 million in the greater metro area
Province
Western Cape (legislative capital of South Africa)
Climate
Mediterranean, dry, warm summers (Nov–Mar), wet mild winters (Jun–Aug)

What makes it unique

Cape Town is the city most people picture when they imagine South Africa, and it earns that reputation honestly. Table Mountain sits over the city like it's watching, the Atlantic runs cold and clear along the Camps Bay strip, and the light in the late afternoon does something to the whole place that photographs never quite capture. It's also the most internationally connected city in the country, with a visible, established queer scene centered around De Waterkant and Cape Town Pride drawing crowds from across the continent every year.

It's a city of contrasts you feel immediately: colonial-era architecture next to some of the most progressive social spaces in Africa, extreme wealth a few kilometers from extreme poverty, wine country twenty minutes from a working harbor. None of that is hidden here. It's just part of what the city is.
