What makes it unique

Johannesburg started as a gold rush camp and never really stopped moving at that pace. It's the country's financial and business center, which means it's also where a lot of the real conversations about South Africa's future are actually happening. The city gets a reputation for being tough, and there's truth in that, but it's also home to one of the most layered histories in the country and a creative energy that Cape Town, for all its beauty, doesn't have.

Soweto sits at the center of that history. Vilakazi Street is the only street in the world that was once home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, and walking it is a different experience than reading about it ever was. Johannesburg Pride, held every October, is the largest Pride event on the African continent.
