Knysna

Province
Western Cape
Climate
Temperate, year-round rainfall, mild summers and winters compared to the rest of the country

What makes it unique

Knysna is the town that convinces people who came to South Africa for Cape Town and Johannesburg that they need to see more of the country. It sits on a lagoon guarded by two sandstone cliffs, the Knysna Heads, where the water meets the Indian Ocean through a narrow gap that's as dramatic in person as it sounds. The town itself is small, walkable, and built around that lagoon in a way that makes the water part of daily life rather than a weekend destination.

It's the anchor town of the Garden Route, one of the most scenic drives in the country, forest, coastline, and mountains within a couple of hours of each other. Knysna also hosts the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras every September, one of the longest-running Pride celebrations in South Africa and the only one built around a full carnival parade.
